How to play Tangram

Choose a round of Tangram and settle into its rules. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
