How to play Sokoban

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Sokoban. Push every crate onto a target. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
